I'm That Fucking Jew

In the dim light of a hurried morning, I dressed in a way I thought would let me slip through the world unnoticed. I believed my long skirt would make me invisible, that I could blend into a different community, leaving behind the expectations and fears of my own. But as I leaped across the street, trying to make the light, the world saw me for who I truly am. 

The harsh shout from a passing car:

"You FUCKING... JEW!"

The pause was in itself a little reprieve, but as It came out, I realized that no matter what I think I look like, my true identity is unmistakable. So I will wear it now, in many ways. In all the ways that name me. In all the facets. In all the masks. 

Because I'm That Fucking Jew. And there's no stopping me now.
